The Akitio MyCloud Mini is a convenient personal cloud server that provides safe and secure network storage plus the ability to easily share your digital content with friends and family. The MyCloud Mini also includes a UPnP-AV media server to stream media files on the local network. The web based file browser and media player allow users to manage and playback media files, while the web portal gives users remote access at home and on the road. The UPnP-AV and DLNA compatible devices include Xbox 360 (JPG, MP3, WMV, XviD), PlayStation 3 (JPG, MP3, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, XviD), iTunes (MP3), DLNA certified UPnP clients, and Windows 7 (Windows Media Player). Another great feature is data can be uploaded to the Gigabit network drive and shared from multiple workstations via SMB or FTP connection, similar to a traditional NAS system.
The MyCloud Mini has a compact chassis and measures just under 5" x 5" x 1.5" with a small gap just below the top surface to allow heat to escape from the internal electronics and hard drive. This also give the MyCloud Mini a high-tech look. We found that the unit ran relatively cool and does not generate any significant heat even with our 5400 rpm drive. The unit itself (without a drive) only dissipates about 8 Watts. The front of the unit has a blue LED indicator that lets you know that power is on. The indicator flashes when booting and goes solid when it is ready. When shutting down (by holding the power button down for several seconds), the indicator will flash between blue and magenta before going off.
The back of the MyCloud Mini has the input power jack, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA port, and the gigabit ethernet jack. A small reset button allows for a hard reset, which is also used during firmware updates. The input power jack mates to the universal AC power adapter (100-240VAC, 50/60 Hz) that provides 5V at 2 amps. The power button is also located on the back giving the front of the MyCloud Mini a clean look. Users can expand their HDD storage using the eSATA port with support for RAID 0 or RAID 1.
The MyCloud Mini has four screws on the bottom of the unit that hold the cover. Inside, there is just enough space for a 2.5-inch SATA drive to slide into the mating connector. For testing purposes, we installed a 640GB Western Digital Scorpio drive. All mounting hardware is provided, which allows for a quick and easy installation. Internally, the unit is clean, with high quality surface mount electronics and cabling. Rubber feet keep the unit from sliding around on a smooth surface. The installation process is fast and can be done in minutes. The design allows multiple units to be stacked.
The MyCloud Mini allows your peeps to access your content quickly and easily using the phone/tablet apps or by remotely connecting directly to your device over the internet using the Akitio portal website. On our local network, we simply typed in the IP address of the unit to connect. Setup is simple and only requires the user to enter the MyCloud Mini MAC address found on the bottom of the unit, username and password. Once connected, photos, videos, music and documents can all be uploaded manually or automatically when using the MyCloud app on your iPhone or Android phone. It is a great way to connect and all of your information safely resides on the MyCloud Mini.
I tested the capabilities using both iOS devices (iPhone 4 and iPad) as well as Android-based (Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone and Nexus 7 tablet). All devices worked well and were able to access the shared drive content. The user interface for each of the devices were slightly different, but functionally similar enough to make it easy to navigate through the menu system. Users can simply launch the MyCloud application and click on the Camera or Video Recorder button to have photos/videos that they take transfer directly to the MyCloud Mini server. Existing photos/videos can be moved using the Photo Upload and Video Upload options. The Upload Manager can be used to move other files such as documents to the server. The software is intuitive and easy to use.
The MyCloud Mini is a cool product that allows you to create your personal cloud and start sharing files with your friends and family. This product is easy to configure and lets you instantly upload when picture and videos as they are being taken when you use the app. The MyCloud Mini is a great deal (under $100) for those looking to remotely share files with others.
