Fox Home Entertainment
and JVC demonstrates Fox and JVC recently hosted a press demonstration featuring previews of the upcoming releases of X2: X-Men United and Moulin Rouge in the D-Theater encryption format. Both of these titles are due to be released on November 25th. The new titles will feature DTS® Digital Surround at the full bit rate of 1509 kbps. A Dolby Digital soundtrack will also be included. The DTS audio was added as an option to the existing D-Theater software platform which currently includes Dolby Digital and MPEG Audio (MPEG 1 Layer 2) as mandatory audio streams. Fox, JVC and DTS representatives were there to answer questions at the presentation. A/B comparisons were demonstrated with DTS and Dolby Digital using the D-VHS format. Video quality was also compared beween D-VHS and DVD. Video was projected from a JVC D-ILA projector onto a Stewart FireHawk filmscreen. Image quality was stunning with the D-VHS format, while the DVD version appeared blurry in comparison. If you happen to be one of the 30,000 owners of the first generation D-VHS D-Theater machines (JVC HM-DH30000U), you'll probably start kicking and screaming when you find out the new DTS audio on D-Theater will not work on your machine. You'll still be able to play Dolby Digital, but you have no way to output the DTS bitstream from these new tapes. However, JVC does have a new model (HM-DH40000U) that supports this feature. In addition, Marantz has the MV8300 D-Theater D-VHS unit that is also fully compatible with the new DTS tapes. True Lies. Speed and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen will follow on December 16th. These D-VHS D-Theater titles will have a suggested retail price of $34.98 each.
