MR4000 Home Theater Power Management

By Martin Hamano

Panamax MR4000Panamax has introduced the new entry level MR4000 Home Theater Power Management unit designed to protect your valuable electronics from unpredictable and potentially catastrophic power surges. The MR4000 features 8 protected outlets (7 on the back and 1 on the front) with Panamax’s patented Automatic Voltage Monitoring (AVM) technology, which is designed to continuously monitor incoming power and shut off the connected equipment if the line voltage is too low or too high. Panamax applies their Level 2 filtration on the incoming power to keep noise from getting into the audio and video. The MR4000 retails for just under $200, making it an affordable investment to protect your electronics. An optional rack mount kit is also available.

Panamax M4315-PROFront Panel
The front of the MR4000 has an attractive set of horizontal blues light that lets you know the unit is plugged into the wall. Users can toggle the blue lights on and off by pressing the front illumination button. The power button located on the left of the front panel provides the power to the outlets. A Power On light in the center of the unit lets you know that the outlets are active. Should the Automatic Voltage Monitoring circuit detect a problem with the line voltage, a flashing red lightning bolt will be displayed and the unit will automatically turned off the connected equipment thanks to the Protect or Disconnect™ circuit. There is also an indicator that lets the user know if there is a problem with the line polarity or if there is a floating ground.

Panamax MR4000Inside
The MR4000 is by far the least complex design we have seen from Panamax. All eight outlets (7 back and 1 front) receive the same filtering and switching and use heavy gauge 14 AWG wire for power. The LAN board uses several pairs of diodes to clamp the individual LAN lines in the event of an over-voltage or surge. The front panel board handles the user indicators and buttons.

Panamax MR4000The main board provides Panamax Level 2 noise filtration, surge suppression, voltage monitoring, and the Protect or Disconnect™ Technology responsible for cutting off power to the outlets should unsafe voltages be detected at the input. The board uses a 30 amp relay to switch the outlets. A thermal fuse and several MOVs (metal oxide varistors) protect your connected components from large voltage transients. All grounds go to a single point in the chassis.

Panamax MR4000Rear Panel
The rear panel of the MR4000 has a total of seven outlets, which can be switched on or off using the front power button.
A heavy duty 8-foot, 14-gauge power cable with a low profile plug provides both convenience and performance. The MR4000 offers ultra low-loss coaxial protection as well as LAN/Ethernet protection to prevent voltage surges from damaging your equipment. A 15-amp circuit breaker makes it easy to reset the unit should a temporary short occur.

Lab Tests
The MR4000 is designed to protect connected electronics from unsafe voltages by cutting off utility power. Our lab tests revealed that the unit shuts off if the voltage reaches about 140VAC and does not re-establish power until the voltage drops down to around 135VAC. This built-in hysteresis prevents the unit from oscillating on and off if the voltage is fluctuating near the trip point. Like-wise, the unit turns off power if the voltage drops to around 95VAC and does not restore power until the line voltage goes up to about 100VAC for the same reason mentioned above. The test results were right in line with the unit's specifications.

Panamax WarrantyWarranty
The Panamax MR4000 has a $5,000,000 Limited Connected Equipment Policy that says it will, at its discretion, either replace, pay to replace at fair market value, or pay to repair the equipment that is damaged by an AC power, cable, telephone, or lightning surge while connected to a properly installed Panamax MR4000 power conditioner. To be eligible for compensation, repair and or replacement, the power conditioner must shows signs of surge damage or indicate that it is operating outside of design specification limits, relative to its surge protection capability, and under all of the circumstances failed to protect your connected equipment.

The Panamax MR4000 is one of the least expensive power conditioners we have reviewed from the company. They have made this unit both functional and affordable while still offering their premium protection policy. For those looking for peace of mind when connecting their precious hardware to utility power, the Panamax MR4000 is an easy choice.
