| Finding
the right flat panel mount largely depends on the application. Some prefer a simple
mount that offer few adjustment features while others want full control of their
display for tilting and angling. In the latter case, the mount needs to have adequate
strength to handle the weight of the display when extended from the wall. As one
can imagine, extending the display creates a huge lever arm (torque) at the point
where the mount meets the wall. The requires a very strong mount. Peerless Industries,
Inc. has a solution with their new HG Series Articulating Dual-Arm with Vertical
Adjustment (PLAV70-UNLP-GB). This universal mount is extremely well built
and is designed to fit virtually any 42" to 60" flat panel display weighing
up to 200 pounds. The dual-arm design provides easy adjustability of the screen
to extend, swivel and tilt for optimal viewing positions even at large angles.
The vertical adjustment enables the screen to be lowered or raised 1" after
installation for fine tuning. A roll feature allows for easy screen leveling and
cable management help keep the cords organized and out of sight. The wall mount
is available in two colors with a high gloss piano black or a high gloss silver
finish design to match the color of contemporary plasma or LCD displays. The shipping
weight is a whopping 72 lbs. (33 kg), almost as much as the 52" test screen.
The mount alone weighs 63 lbs. (28.5 kg). The PLAV70-UNLP-GB mount includes the
articulating arm, wall plate, mesh cord sheath, cable ties, universal adapter
plate, mounting and screen attachment hardware. .
Screen
Attachment There are two sets of vertical mounting adapters included with
the PLAV70 to allow for slightly different spacing between the display and the
plate. In some cases, more room may be needed to clear cables or other similar
obstructions. A variety of mounting
screws and spacers are provided along with rectangular washers that accommodate
the different mounting holes. Keeping the depth as shallow as possible will ultimately
place the screen closer to the wall when moved into place. We were able to use
the shallow adapters with our Mitsubishi LT-52133 display and it did not require
any spacers between the adapters and the mounting holes.
The
vertical adapters have slotted holes that offers flexible mounting options and
is designed to accommodate a wide variety of screw patterns from manufacturers.
Once the vertical adapters are fastened to the display, the Universal Adapter
Plate can be positioned and held in place by the set screws. Once mounted, a full
±7° roll allows horizontal leveling of the screen .
There
are a few tools that will be needed for the installation. A stud finder ("edge
to edge" stud finder is recommended), drill, 7/32" drill bit for wood
studs, 5/16" masonry drill bit for concrete, 7/16" socket wrench with
extension (recommended), level, Phillips screwdriver, and 3/4" open-end wrench.
The Allen wrenches are included with the mount. For
heavier flat panels, Peerless makes a heavy-duty (20 pound) Metal Stud Wall Plate
designed to be used with the PLA Series Wall Mounts that spans between three studs
(spaced 16"). The baseline mount is designed to attach to two wood studs
or concrete. The back plate measures 19.75" wide and 13.5" high. The
slots on the wall mount have 16" centers for standard stud mounting. There
are a total eight bolts that attach the mount to the wall.
Placing
the articulating arms on the wall plate takes some effort due to the weight. The
arms allow the display to be extended out from the wall at a maximum of about
31.3" and retracts to 0.6". The articulating arm design allows the display
to be positioned at a full 90° in either direction giving the user a lot of
flexibility. To obtain this range the display width will need to be limited to
about 40.5". A larger screen can be used, but the display will not be able
to achieve the full 180° movement. In addition to the horizontal movement,
the display can be tilted forward a maximum of 10°. This can be useful if
the viewer is sitting just below the front of the panel. The display can also
be tilted back about 5° if needed. Cables can be kept neatly in place using
the mesh cord sheath and cable ties provided with the mount. Again, this mount
is heavy and very strong. Users will be impressed with the end result and be assured
that their display is in good hands.
Conclusion After
spending thousands on a high-end flat panel for your home theater, the last thing
you want to worry about is the mount that holds it to your wall. Buying a high
quality display mount that offers the flexibility you need is essential for both
functionality and peace of mind. Peerless has a solution that is affordable with
their HG Series Articulating Dual-Arm with Vertical Adjustment (PLAV70-UNLP-GB).
The design looks great and whether you prefer a high gloss piano black or a high
gloss silver finish, Peerless has you covered. -
